Jimmy Dunne named reserve goalkeeper for Ireland’s Nations League tie with Israel

Republic of Ireland defender Jimmy Dunne has been added to the match‑day squad as a reserve goalkeeper for tonight’s UEFA Nations League game against Israel.

The change follows goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu’s decision to withdraw from both fixtures on conscientious grounds. His statement said the move was motivated by his belief that “the killing of innocent people is wrong”, and clarified that it was not directed against the Israeli people or the Jewish community.

With Bazunu out, manager Heimir Hallgrímsson now has first‑choice Caoimhín Kelleher and Max O’Leary as the two selected keepers. UEFA regulations require three goalkeepers in each squad, so Dunne, a three‑time capped defender who plays for QPR, has been drafted into the role.

It is considered unlikely that Dunne will be called upon, as O’Leary is expected to replace Kelleher only if an injury or dismissal occurs. The match at Nagyerdei Stadion kicks off at 7.45 pm Irish time, with a second fixture scheduled for next Sunday in Backa Topola.
