Munster Rugby reshapes coaching staff amid injury woes

Munster Rugby have overhauled their coaching set‑up for the 2024‑25 season as head coach Clayton McMillan seeks consistency after a turbulent debut year.

Following the failed appointment of former Chiefs attack guru Roger Randle and the resignation of the Professional Games Committee, an independent governance review is due by the end of the month. In the meantime, McMillan has added former Scarlets player Jared Payne to share attack duties with promoted Mossy Lawler, and appointed Jimmy Duffy as forwards coach to replace Alex Codling, who has moved to Toulon.

The province also faces a spate of injuries. First‑choice fly‑half Jack Crowley is out with a lower‑leg vascular injury until at least Christmas, while new signing Will Harrison is recovering from a recurrent knee problem and academy prospect Tom Wood will miss the start after shoulder surgery. Additional absences include Edwin Edogbo, Tom Farrell and Calvin Nash.

Despite these setbacks, Munster’s High Performance Centre at the University of Limerick reports a positive atmosphere. New academy players, seven of whom featured for Ireland at the Under‑20 World Championships, are expected to inject fresh energy.

New arrivals such as South Africa hooker Marnus van der Merwe, former England prop Kieran Brookes and Connacht tighthead Jack Aungier bolster the squad, although no direct replacements have been named for departing lock Jean Kleyn and wing Thaakir Abrahams.
