Mountcharles rider Jamie Meehan leads breakaway in World Cycling Championships

Young Mountcharles cyclist Jamie Meehan impressed in his debut at the UCI World Championships elite men’s road race in Montreal.

The 23‑year‑old, who turned professional last year after signing with the Cofidis Team, was part of the front breakaway for 160 kilometres, staying ahead of the peloton for more than three hours.

Team Ireland’s squad was expected to support Tour de France stage winner and 2025 World Championship bronze medallist Ben Healy, but Meehan was sent out early to help create a gap. As the race progressed, many riders dropped from the lead group, yet Meehan remained with a select few, including three‑time Tour de France stage winner Biniam Girmay.

By the halfway point, only six riders were left in the break, and Meeley outlasted Girmay, being among the last to be caught when the peloton accelerated with just over 100 kilometres remaining.

Commentators and fans praised Meehan’s performance, noting that his showing against the sport’s top talent could attract interest from WorldTour teams. He follows in the footsteps of Letterkenny’s Philip Deignan, who also raced at the World Championships and won a Vuelta Espana stage.
