UK employer gives holiday‑leave priority to parents with school‑age children

A British employer has announced that annual leave requests will no longer be dealt with on a first‑come, first‑served basis, giving priority to staff who have school‑age children.

During the Lunchtime Live programme, Siobhan O’Neill White of Mams.ie said the policy is “really tricky”. She noted that parents face extra demands when organising childcare and holidays around the school calendar, especially over Christmas and Easter breaks.

O’Neill White explained that employees without children or with grown‑up children enjoy greater flexibility when booking trips, whereas parents are more restricted by school terms. She added that, although the wording may appear to give “preferential treatment” to parents, the reality is that they need more flexibility in work and time off.

The employer’s approach aims to address the challenges parents face in balancing work commitments with school schedules, though it has sparked discussion about fairness among the wider workforce.
