GOP Senators Attack Ex‑Special Counsel Jack Smith at Senate Hearing

Former special counsel Jack Smith, who led two criminal cases against former President Donald Trump in 2023, was criticised by Republican senators during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Tuesday.

Senator Eric Schmitt of Missouri raised perjury allegations against Smith, referring to a confusion between the Atlanta Hawks and the University of Iowa Hawkeyes basketball teams.

The hearing also featured other colourful remarks, including a reference to the tooth fairy, as GOP members sought to challenge Smith’s credibility.

Smith, who oversaw the investigations into Trump’s actions, faced a wide‑ranging attack that combined invective with inaccurate information.
