New SEAI car scrappage grant expected in 2025

A new SEAI grant for car scrappage is anticipated to be introduced next year, according to a prediction by DoneDeal.ie.

In July, the Government launched a €10 million pilot scrappage scheme that offered owners of petrol and diesel cars a €5,000 grant to scrap their vehicle and purchase an electric vehicle (EV). When combined with the existing €3,500 grant for new EVs, the ICE2EV Pilot Scrappage Scheme provided a total State subsidy of €8,500.

Minister Darragh O’Brien described the pilot as an “incredible success”. He noted that the scheme was oversubscribed, with 3,000 applicants for 2,000 grants, and insiders expect a permanent scrappage scheme could be announced soon.

Industry analyst Mr Comyn said rising fuel prices have driven strong interest in EVs, with record searches for electric models. He added that concerns about EV range have lessened, while buyers now focus on battery longevity, warranties for new cars and the health of used‑car batteries.

Comyn expressed confidence in the continued shift toward electric vehicles.
