Over 4,000 Elderly in Donegal Seek Help from ALONE Volunteers

More than 4,255 older people in Donegal have received support from the volunteer charity ALONE this year, as loneliness remains the biggest driver of demand for assistance.

ALONE relies on 739 volunteers who provide regular visits, phone calls, companionship and practical help, enabling many seniors to remain safe and independent at home.

The charity reports that three‑quarters of older people who receive its support say they feel less lonely, highlighting the importance of volunteer contact in combating isolation.

CEO Sean Moynihan noted that volunteers are often the first to spot emerging needs and can connect recipients with services for housing, health, finance and social care.

ALONE’s broader programme aims to train and retain volunteers, offering flexible opportunities that fit individual availability while contributing to a network that addresses a range of wellbeing challenges faced by older adults across Ireland.
