Permanent water supply restored to Gola Island after pipeline repairs

Uisce Éireann has completed repairs to the subsea water pipeline serving Gola Island, restoring the island’s permanent water supply.

The damaged pipeline required a complex marine engineering operation, including underwater inspections, specialist vessels and diving teams. After the repair work was finished, the pipeline was tested and recommissioned, and extensive sampling confirmed the water meets drinking‑water standards.

Following consultations with the Health Service Executive, the Boil Water Notice that had been in place since April 2026 was lifted, allowing residents to use tap water for drinking, cooking and brushing teeth.

Uisce Éireann spokesperson Damien O’Sullivan said the project “required specialist marine crews, diving teams and technical experts working together in challenging offshore conditions” and thanked the Gola Island community for their patience.

Donegal County Councillors, including Independent councillor Michael McClafferty, welcomed the completion of the works, noting the importance of reliable water services for island residents, businesses and tourism.
