Mona McSharry eyes LA 2028 after European bronze haul

Mona McSharry, the 26‑year‑old competitive swimmer from Grange, Sligo, is preparing for the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup and has set her sights on the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

McSharry began swimming at age five and quickly progressed, winning her first competition after a coach‑organised snorkelling event. By 15, she and coach Grace Meade were targeting the Olympics, with Tokyo 2020 described as a “feeler” and Paris 2024 as her prime. She secured a bronze medal in Paris and added one silver and two bronze medals at this summer’s European Aquatics Championships.

Family and early life

She spent her first 19 years on her family’s farm by the sea in Sligo, alongside younger brother Mouric and sister Luca. Both siblings joined the local Marlins Swim Club, training together until McSharry left for college in Tennessee.

McSharry recalls a close bond with her parents, Viola and Aidan, who supported her swimming career while also involving her in farm work during the pandemic.

Now based abroad, McSharry is reflecting on her journey and looking ahead to future international competitions, describing the period beyond Paris as “uncharted waters”.
