Labour TD urges government to detail plan for removing housing barriers

Labour TD Conor Sheehan has called on the Government to urgently outline how it will eliminate planning and infrastructure obstacles that are delaying new homes.

Sheehan highlighted a recent Central Bank warning that housing delivery now takes twice as long as it did ten years ago, with an average of four years from planning application to completion, compared with two years a decade ago.

The TD said the Government must prioritise water, wastewater and electricity connections for housing developments and explain how it intends to meet its targets after the bank revised down its completion forecasts.

“It takes an average of four years to deliver a home from the initial planning application to completion, compared with two years a decade ago. That is an extraordinary deterioration during a housing emergency and a damning indictment of this Government’s failure to plan,” Sheehan said.
