Gavin Bazunu’s refusal to play Israel sparks squad tension

A late press conference in Hungary on Saturday confirmed that the Republic of Ireland squad voted on whether to fulfil their Nations League fixture against Israel on Sunday.

Goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu announced he will not take part in the match, stating he “tries his best to be a person of character and principle” and believes this is a moment to “stand up for something bigger.” His comments have reportedly caused friction within the squad.

According to Sports Reporter Aidan Fitzmaurice, who was in Hungary for the game, the team debated the issue for four hours after Bazunu raised his concerns with the head coach on Saturday morning. A vote was taken and the majority opted to play, but Bazunu reiterated his decision to sit out in a statement released that evening.

Fitzmaurice suggested the statement may have created a “fracture” in the group, noting the close camaraderie among the players – who often refer to each other as “bro” and share personal milestones on social media – appears to have been damaged.

Online reaction has largely supported Bazunu, with many praising his stance and condemning the players who chose to play. Fitzmaurice warned that the heightened criticism and “hero worship” of Bazunu could influence some squad members who initially voted against playing.
