FAI postpones press conference ahead of Israel match after player protest

The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) delayed a scheduled press conference in Debrecen by 15 minutes on Friday after members of the Irish squad expressed anger over the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures against Israel.

Players, who are set to face Israel in two matches seven days apart, voiced concerns that the opponent is a country found guilty of genocide in Palestine by an independent UN commission. The first leg is due to be hosted by Israel on Sunday at 20:45.

During a lively meeting on Friday, the squad agreed to seek talks with the FAI hierarchy and raised conditions relating to match protocols. They argued that the decision‑makers should face media scrutiny over proceeding with the games.

The press conference, originally due to start at 10:15 local time, was postponed with short notice to both journalists and UEFA. Federations that fail to adhere to scheduled press events can face sanctions, including fines.

Players are still expected to train at Nagyerdei Stadion at 11:00, after which the postponed conference may be rescheduled or a statement issued on their behalf.
