Castleconnell Boat Club names six new rowing boats after distinguished members

Castleconnell Boat Club held its first boat‑naming ceremony in almost 20 years, dedicating six vessels to long‑serving members.

The boats were named in honour of Sean Hartigan, Joe Cunningham, Jimmy O’Neill, Owen Silke, John Murphy and Joe Dundon, recognising their lasting contribution to the club and the local rowing community.

Founded in 1983, the club’s new boats were blessed by the local parish priest, Fr Willie Teehan, with Club President Roisin Hartigan and other members taking part in the evening celebrations.

Minister Patrick O’Donovan served as guest of honour, joined by Senator Maria Byrne, Senator Dee Ryan, local athletes, families, coaches and supporters.

Minister O’Donovan praised community clubs, stating they are “at the heart of Irish sport” and provide young people with opportunities to participate, develop, compete and become part of a community.

He highlighted Castleconnell’s tradition of producing athletes who represent Ireland at the highest level, noting that such success is built on the weekly work of volunteers, coaches, parents and members.

The club remains entirely community‑based, relying on the dedication of volunteers and families to offer rowing opportunities and nurture talent from grassroots to elite levels.
