Motorists in Letterkenny have been urged to drive carefully after a diesel spill was reported on Kilmacrennan Road,…

Glenstal Abbey School in Murroe, Co Limerick, is slated to close in 2028 after nearly a century of operation.
The Benedictine trustees say the boarding‑education environment is no longer sustainable, prompting former pupils and parents to urge the Abbot, Columba McCann, to explore “alternative” options that could keep the school open for current students until at least 2032.
Two groups have written to the Abbot. One group of concerned parents emphasises the need for a “viable way to keep Glenstal open for all current pupils to complete their education”. The Glenstal Old Boys Society has also contacted Mr McCann and held a meeting last Saturday to discuss solutions to the school’s finances.
Alumni include business figures John Magnier and Paddy Cosgrave, as well as former Munster rugby players Duncan Casey and Ben Healy, who recalled the strong memories and brotherhood forged at the school. Former student Harry Gleeson described the lasting network of contacts and ongoing reunions that continue to link former pupils.
The campaign mirrors the response to the planned closure of Cistercian College in Roscrea in 2017, with debate over whether Glenstal might become co‑educational or remain a boys’ boarding school.
