Donegal teen plays cello with U2 at 50th anniversary concert

A Donegal teenager performed on stage with U2 during the band’s 50th anniversary concert in Dublin.

Éabha Flanagan, a fifth‑year student at Loreto Letterkenny, was selected as part of a group of young musicians invited to join the rock legends on the stage where U2 first performed in 1976.

Flanagan played the cello in a youthful string section that accompanied U2 as they performed classic tracks at the Mount Temple Comprehensive School, the venue where the band first emerged as rebellious students.

Following the school performance, the quartet of icons returned to the balcony of Bewley’s Café on Grafton Street for a second surprise gig, where the young musicians again shared the stage with the band.

After the concert, Éabha was able to take photographs with Bono and The Edge, marking a memorable experience for the aspiring musician.
