US Senator John Kennedy calls for rule on taxpayer‑funded Trump ads

US Republican senator John Kennedy said there should be a rule prohibiting the White House from using taxpayer money to fund advertising that promotes former President Donald Trump.

Speaking to CBS News on Sunday, Kennedy told host Margaret Brennan that the current practice of airing “public service announcements” for Trump ahead of the November midterm elections “ought to be a rule” and suggested the spending is “probably” illegal.

The White House has expanded a taxpayer‑funded campaign that includes multiple ads featuring Trump, one of which was produced for his 2024 election campaign.

Kennedy, a fellow Republican of President Joe Biden, was questioned about the legality of the spending during the interview.
