US Supreme Court permits limited resumption of deportations to third countries

The US Supreme Court has ruled that the government may temporarily resume deporting individuals to third countries.

Human rights groups say more than 25,000 people have already been deported to 29 countries under the policy introduced last year.

The decision follows earlier legal battles, including a February ruling by a Trump‑appointed federal judge that blocked the Justice Department from releasing the second volume of a criminal investigation report by Special Counsel Jack Smith.

The first volume of Smith’s report led to two indictments against former President Donald Trump, one concerning attempts to overturn the 2020 election and the other relating to the retention of classified documents.
