Trump administration launches America.gov AI portal for public services

The White House has unveiled a new website, America.gov, designed to act as a single digital entry point for U.S. citizens seeking federal information and services.

President Donald Trump announced the launch on Tuesday, accompanied by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. The site operates like a chatbot, comparable to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude, directing users to official government pages for tasks such as passport renewals.

According to chief design officer Joe Gebbia, America.gov is powered by Google’s Gemini AI and xAI’s Grok. An executive order describes it as “a unified digital front door to the Federal Government for every individual in the United States seeking Federal information or services,” allowing users to sign in, ask questions in plain language and, where possible, complete transactions without navigating multiple agency sites.

White House officials said the portal will adhere to the security protocols of the specific agencies consulted and will not retain user data; agencies like Medicare will retain any information required for transactions. Tests by Al Jazeera showed the bot refrains from labeling news outlets and correctly identified Joe Biden as the winner of the 2020 election.

Future capabilities may include direct passport applications and photo uploads, as demonstrated by Rubio during the presentation. The website was developed in partnership with the National Design Studio, part of the Executive Office of the President, established by Trump in August 2025.
