Dr Sarah Fitzgibbon, a Cork‑based general practitioner and patient advocate, died on Monday after battling colorectal cancer.

She passed away surrounded by her family at Marymount Hospice. Dr Fitzgibbon is survived by her husband Derek and their three children, Ellen, Will and Catherine.

Diagnosed with cancer in 2014 at the age of 37, she became a public voice on the disease, speaking about the importance of living each day fully. She also founded the Women in Medicine in Ireland Network and worked in recent years for the National Screening Service.

Colleagues described her as a champion for kind, effective and efficient healthcare, especially for marginalised groups. They praised her warmth, honesty, kindness and wit, noting her extraordinary contribution to Ireland’s screening services.

Funeral arrangements are listed on RIP.ie, with a removal at Temple Hill Funeral Home on Friday at 4 pm and a cremation on Saturday at 3 pm, which will be livestreamed.
