Tillis calls Trump’s backing of Paxton a “colossal mistake”

U.S. Senator Thom Tillis said Donald Trump’s endorsement of Ken Paxton over incumbent John Cornyn was a “colossal mistake” for the Republican Party.

Tillis, a frequent critic of the former president and a senator from North Carolina, made the comment during an interview on CNN’s State of the Union programme on Sunday.

The remark refers to Trump’s support for Paxton in the Texas Senate Republican primary, in which Paxton defeated Cornyn in the May primary.

Tillis warned that the endorsement could jeopardise the Senate seat for Republicans.
