A female teacher at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon, tackled a 16‑year‑old shooter and tried to wrestle his gun from him, police said.

The attacker entered the classroom on Thursday, firing up to 15 rounds and killing three children and a teacher. He was later shot dead by a father of two daughters who was driving past the school; he entered the building armed with a concealed .40 calibre pistol and fired multiple times at the suspect.

Police identified the victims as five‑year‑old Rhoam Summer and 25‑year‑old teacher Meghan Lambert. Lambert’s family described her as compassionate and dedicated to special‑needs students. The families of an eight‑year‑old and an 11‑year‑old who also died have asked that their children not be named.

Two other pupils and a 54‑year‑old teacher were injured; the teacher remains in hospital and a seven‑year‑old student is in serious but stable condition.

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz praised the courage of the teacher and the intervening father, saying their actions “almost certainly helped prevent more bloodshed.” The suspect, identified as Griffin J John II, was a former special‑educational‑needs student at the school. A search warrant has been executed at his home and investigations continue into how he obtained the weapon.
