Gardaí have recorded more than 1,500 speed‑limit offences during the first two days of the October Bank Holiday Roads Policing Operation.
The force confirmed that 1,570 drivers were caught exceeding the speed limit, while 40 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs within the initial 48‑hour period.
In addition, over 200 motorists were stopped for using a mobile phone while driving or for failing to wear a seatbelt.
The operation, which will run until Tuesday morning, includes Mandatory Intoxicant Testing checkpoints and regular high‑visibility policing checkpoints across the country.
A Garda spokesperson urged road users to slow down, obey speed limits, avoid drink‑or‑drug driving, wear seatbelts and refrain from mobile phone distraction to ensure safe travel this weekend.
