SEAI to launch €600 solar battery grant in coming weeks

A new SEAI grant of €600 for solar batteries is expected to be announced within weeks, according to Conal Thomas of the Irish Independent on The Claire Byrne Show.

The grant will be formally detailed in Budget 2027 and will support households installing solar batteries, which store energy generated by solar panels instead of exporting it to the grid. A typical solar battery costs around €4,000 and can save a household hundreds of euro each year.

The scheme forms part of the Government’s target to retrofit 500,000 homes to a B2 BER standard by 2030, using SEAI incentives to cut carbon emissions and reduce fuel poverty.

Thomas also noted a separate €2,000 grant for households replacing oil boilers with new heating technology, adding to the existing €12,500 heat‑pump grant, bringing total support to about €14,500.

He expects strong uptake on the battery grant, with applications opening in early 2027, and suggested that the timing of the announcement, a week before the budget, reflects ongoing fiscal pressures within the Department of Public Expenditure.
