Man released from Limerick prison sentenced for smashing student house window

A 42‑year‑old man who smashed a window at a University of Limerick student house was sentenced to one month in prison and fined €200.

Limerick District Court heard that Alan Roche of Bob and Joan’s Walk, Shandon, County Cork, was reported acting aggressively at the Dromroe Village student accommodation on the night of 30 June, shortly after being released from prison earlier that day.

Sergeant Aisling O’Neill testified that campus security attempted to calm Roche, who responded with obscenities before breaking a window of one of the student houses. He was then taken away in a patrol car.

Roche has 55 previous convictions, including assault, disorderly conduct, public order offences and road traffic offences, but this is his first conviction for criminal damage. His solicitor, Tom Kiely, said Roche pleaded guilty at every opportunity, does not recall breaking the window, and was under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time.

The court was told Roche has two young children he wishes to return to. Judge Derek McCarthy imposed the one‑month custodial sentence and the €200 fine.
