Councillor Catherine Slattery of Fianna Fáil has called for Limerick City and County Council to establish an out‑of‑hours animal welfare officer.

At a recent full council meeting the council confirmed it currently has no authorised officer appointed under the Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013 and lacks statutory authority to enforce the Act’s provisions.

The council stated there are no plans to appoint such an officer or to create an out‑of‑hours service, noting that responsibility for implementing and enforcing the 2013 Act primarily lies with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.
