Cork man admits 210 fraud charges over invalidity pension claims

A 55‑year‑old man from Cork has pleaded guilty to 210 charges of fraudulently claiming an invalidity pension.

Garda Raphael Liston charged Nicholas Mulcahy of 17 Glencree Crescent, Mayfield, with offences under the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act. The charges relate to weekly pension payments of €347 to €386, and a smaller number of fortnightly payments.

The alleged fraud took place between May 2019 and October 2023, resulting in a loss of more than €86,000 to the Department of Social Protection.

Mulcahy appeared before Cork District Court, where his solicitor Shane Collins‑Daly indicated that a book of evidence would not be required and that the defendant would enter signed pleas of guilty on Monday to all charges.

Following an application by Sergeant John Dineen, Judge David Waters ordered the case to be sent forward for sentencing at Cork Circuit Criminal Court, scheduled to begin on 27 October.
