The next public sector shutdown in Ireland has been confirmed for Thursday 12 November.

The 24‑hour strike follows a failed meeting with trade unions, who say the government has not presented an offer that reflects inflation and the cost‑of‑living crisis. Unions describe the talks as reaching a “pretty significant impasse”.

About 100,000 public service workers are expected to walk out, with rallies planned across the country, including a large gathering in Dublin city. Smaller regional rallies will also take place.

Kevin Callinan, chair of the ICTU public services committee, said the shift from the originally suggested Wednesday 11 November to Thursday was for “logistical reasons”, not to affect the EU Presidency event taking place in Dublin.

Union representatives indicated that a few more sectors may receive derogations, but the overall scope of the strike remains similar to previous actions. They are also considering escalating to a work‑to‑rule campaign and further strikes after 12 November, though no dates have been set.

The strike coincides with the ninth meeting of the European Political Community in Dublin, which brings together European heads of state and key institutional leaders.
