The final touches are being applied this week to the €15 million Fintra Bridge and Road Realignment Project near Killybegs.

The scheme upgrades and realigns about 2 km of the existing R263, stretching from the town’s Glenlee Roundabout towards Kilcar. It includes a new crossing over the Fintra River and a pedestrian‑ and cycle‑route on the old bridge linking to Fintra Beach.

Councillor Niamh Kennedy, a key driver of the project, said the works will improve connectivity and road safety for pedestrians and cyclists between Killybegs and Fintra Beach, and enhance access to Fintra National School and the Killybegs GAA Club.

Kennedy highlighted that the old narrow bridge, long a bottleneck for motorists, has been retained for use as a cycle and walkway. She praised main contractor BAM for delivering the project in just over 16 months, well ahead of the original two‑and‑a‑half year schedule, and noted that BAM has been shortlisted for an award.

The new road and bridge are expected to be officially opened before Christmas.
