Public service unions have announced a 24‑hour strike for Thursday 12 November, timed to coincide with the European Political Community summit in Dublin.

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) Public Services Committee met on Monday at Congress House, Parnell Square, to discuss further action after talks at the Workplace Relations Committee (WRC) broke down on Friday night. Unions said an impasse meant no credible offer had been made by the Government.

A spokesperson for the committee said unions remain available for discussions and will meet the Government‑appointed group on Tuesday 3 November. Preparations are now under way for the stoppage and a rally in Dublin, with regional rallies planned to show support for a resolution.

The strike could involve up to 300,000 public sector workers, affecting schools, hospitals, local authorities and other services. It follows a one‑day strike on 14 October, while a second day on 21 October was postponed after talks began.

The Government‑appointed group, chaired by Kevin Foley of the WRC and including Department of Environment Secretary General Oonagh Buckley and ICTU’s Owen Reidy, will meet union representatives on Tuesday to consider ways forward.
