Martin Halpin, 28, was sentenced in Cork District Court for openly masturbating in the accident and emergency unit of Mercy University Hospital.

The incident occurred in the early hours of 20 April 2025 when medical staff called a security officer as the patient began to expose himself and masturbate in front of them. A Garda arrived but the man continued the act despite being directed to stop.

At the court hearing, Halpin pleaded guilty to “intentionally engaging in offensive conduct of a sexual nature” under the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act. Defence solicitor Diane Hallahan said the defendant had been at the hospital for a meeting with a psychiatrist and has no family support, receiving jobseekers’ allowance.

Judge David Waters noted the offence took place in the A&E department, not a psychiatric unit, and that Halpin had been in custody since 8 October on this charge. He received a five‑month sentence, suspended on the condition that he keep the peace for two years.
