Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival draws thousands of singles this September

Over 60,000 visitors are flocking to Lisdoonvarna this September for Europe’s largest singles festival, the annual Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival.

Set in the historic Matchmaker Bar, hopeful romantics line up with a five‑euro note and a questionnaire, hoping the 160‑year‑old tradition will pair them off.  Willie Daly greets arrivals from near and far, while staff such as Anthony Quinn keep the dancefloor lively, noting that a few couples have stayed together after meeting at the event.

International participants join the fun

Among the queue are Ethan Miller, 32, from Chicago, who says he is “just having fun” and sees the festival as a story to tell.  Irish attendee Eric Molloy, 44, describes September as a “famous month” for singletons and a chance to keep a long‑standing tradition alive.

Matches are also happening on the dancefloor: Morgan Swift, 24, from Utah, met Kilkenny native Kieran Fennelly, 34, after hearing about the festival on TikTok.  Mary Timby, who went viral after meeting her partner at last year’s event, returned this year to help others find love.

Participants fill out paperwork detailing their interests, age and what they seek in a partner, before the matchmaker makes introductions.  The festival combines live country music, dancing and a distinctly Irish social scene, offering a face‑to‑face alternative to dating apps.
