For World Rivers Day on 27 September, a new app was released to help Limerick’s citizen scientists assess the health of local streams.
The River Basin Management Service introduced the “Beginner’s Guide to Water Quality Monitoring: The Citizen Science Stream Index” (CSSI), a guidance tool and dedicated application for water quality monitoring.
The CSSI enables volunteers to examine macroinvertebrates – tiny aquatic animals used as indicators of water quality – to build a clearer picture of Ireland’s waterways.
Communities can access further information and download the app via the River Basin Management Service website at riverbasin.ie/citizen-science.
