Xi Jinping and Donald Trump meet in Washington, extend tariff truce

The world’s two most powerful men, Chinese President Xi Jinping and former U.S. President Donald Trump, met in Washington on Thursday.

The meeting was marked by a series of symbolic gestures, including the presentation of Chinese pandas by President Xi. While the ceremony featured considerable pomp and pageantry, substantive outcomes were limited.

Both leaders agreed to a six‑month extension of the existing tariff truce, maintaining the current trade arrangements between the United States and China.

BBC China correspondent Laura Bicker provided analysis of the visit, noting that the trip offered limited concrete progress for either Beijing or Washington despite the high‑profile nature of the encounter.
