Investigation launched after landslide at Drumnahough wind farm site in Donegal

An investigation has been opened following a landslide at the Drumnahough Wind Farm construction site, located 13 km outside Letterkenny in County Donegal.

The incident occurred on 17 September when a rock berm – an engineered structure designed to contain excavated material – was breached, causing a large movement of earth onto a lower embankment. The wind farm, a €120 million project being built by SSE and FuturEnergy Ireland, is planned to generate 58 MW from 12 turbines, together with associated roads and substations.

A spokesperson for Drumnahough Wind Farm confirmed that no one was injured and that the area was immediately secured. Works in the vicinity have been suspended while on‑site engineers and environmental specialists assess and manage the situation. Precautionary measures have been put in place to contain displaced material, protect nearby watercourses and limit any environmental impact.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said it has been notified by the Loughs Agency of the incident and that the investigation falls within the Loughs Agency’s remit, with the EPA offering assistance if required.
