Woman from Kerrera wins free stay at Fanad Lighthouse after bottle wash‑up

A resident of the tiny Inner Hebrides island of Kerrera has discovered one of ten “golden ticket” bottles launched from Fanad Lighthouse in County Donegal, winning a free stay in the lighthouse keeper’s accommodation.

Ann McGregor, one of just 68 people living on Kerrera, found the bottle on Wednesday while walking her dog along the coast. The glass bottle, sealed with a natural cork and wax, contained a rolled‑up paper confirming her prize.

Launch of the bottles

The ten bottles were set adrift on 24 August to mark the ten‑year anniversary of Fanad Lighthouse opening to the public. With the assistance of boatman Andrew from Sea Fishing Donegal, the bottles were aimed to catch currents toward Iceland or the Outer Hebrides.

The project was designed with marine sustainability in mind, using real glass bottles and avoiding plastic to prevent marine waste.

McGregor said she had long wanted to visit the area and was delighted to have the “golden ticket” arrive on her “wee home island”.
