A 40‑year‑old woman pleaded guilty to child cruelty after her three‑year‑old son walked alone to a grocery shop after 9.30 pm and told the shopkeeper he was hungry.
The case was heard in an in‑camera session at Cork Circuit Criminal Court, where the woman was arraigned on a charge of wilful neglect under the Children’s Act, relating to the incident on 21 June 2024.
Sergeant John Kelleher of the Gardaí explained that the shopkeeper contacted the local Garda station, prompting officers to look after the child and notify Tusla. The child was later placed in the care of his father.
Following a phone call from the mother later that night reporting the boy missing, Gardaí attended her home and found her intoxicated, raising further concerns.
Defence barrister Mahon Corkery requested a probation report, and Judge Helen Boyle adjourned sentencing to the next session of Cork Circuit Criminal Court, scheduled to begin on 8 February 2027.
