A viable explosive device was delivered to the Ebrington Hotel in Derry’s Ebrington Square area, prompting a security alert that has now been resolved.
Chief Superintendent Gillian Kearney of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said officers received a report at about 3.20 pm yesterday of a suspicious package at the hotel. Police attended the scene, evacuated hotel guests and staff, and also cleared nearby premises as part of the public‑safety operation.
Ammunition Technical Officers examined the object and carried out a controlled explosion, confirming the device was viable. The item has been removed for forensic examination and an investigation is under way.
Kearney condemned the “reckless and targeted attack” and acknowledged the disruption and distress caused to the local community. She appealed for information, asking anyone with relevant details to contact 101 and quote reference number 1089 of 27/10/26, or to submit a report online via the PSNI non‑emergency reporting form.
