The Guardian reports that the United States’ proposed oil agreement with Venezuela is likely to collapse due to a range of legal and logistical problems.
The deal was announced after the US seized Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and was described by former President Donald Trump as “the biggest oil deal in world history”.
Investigation by the newspaper highlights that the agreement confronts numerous obstacles, including questions over its enforceability under international law and the practical challenges of extracting and transporting oil under current sanctions.
Trump has a long‑standing interest in seizing foreign oil, having first suggested taking Iranian oil in a 1987 interview with ABC’s Barbara Walters, and later referencing similar actions in Libya and Iraq.
The report concludes that, given the complex legal landscape and operational difficulties, the US‑Venezuela oil deal is “almost certainly doomed to collapse”.
