Press conference for Ireland‑Israel Nations League tie cancelled amid player doubts

A scheduled press conference for the Republic of Ireland’s UEFA Nations League match against Israel was cancelled at the last minute, heightening uncertainty over whether the fixture will go ahead.

Players reportedly reluctant to feature

Rumours suggest that goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu and up to four other squad members have indicated they do not wish to play in the controversial game. The Irish squad is expected to issue a statement around 12:30 pm Irish time, but the exact stance remains unclear.

Chief Sports Writer for The Irish Sun, Neil O’Riordan, told The Pat Kenny Show that discussions are ongoing despite the match being slated for Sunday. He noted that the squad announced on Thursday appeared to have committed to the fixture, a position reiterated by manager Heimir Hallgrímsson after the Kosovo match, but individual players have now signalled opposition.

O’Riordan criticised the timing of the issue, saying it was unrealistic to resolve the matter in the few days left and that the irregular nature of international football makes coordination difficult. He warned that if some players refuse to play, it could affect squad cohesion.

UEFA rules state that if Ireland withdraw, Israel would be awarded a 3‑0 win, and there could be financial penalties similar to those imposed on Baltic states that refused to face Belarus.

The press conference has been rescheduled for 2:30 pm Irish time.
