US forces carried out limited strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz late on Monday, Iranian state media reported hearing explosions on the island.

The attacks were described by US media as “defensive” and not intended as a signal of a return to full‑scale hostilities.

Hours after the strikes, US vice‑president JD Vance said he was optimistic that diplomatic efforts to end the war were moving in the right direction.

The timing of the strikes coincides with the eve of the crucial US midterm elections, where analysts expect the Republican party, led by former President Donald Trump, could face voter backlash over the war’s impact on the cost of living in the United States.

Both the Iranian reports of explosions and the US description of the operation highlight the heightened tension surrounding the conflict as the US electoral calendar approaches.
