The US Justice Department filed a lawsuit last week seeking to block the certification of Alaska’s US Senate election, at the request of former President Donald Trump, should the Republican incumbent lose narrowly.

A federal judge dismissed the suit on Sunday, though the administration indicated it intends to appeal the decision.

Trump has publicly demanded that Mary Peltola, the Alaska Native Democrat who leads in the polls, be removed from the ballot and face prosecution.

Following Trump’s comments, Alaska’s Republican governor has ordered an investigation into Peltola’s campaign.

The race is seen as a potential flip for control of the US Senate, prompting heightened attention from Republican officials.

These developments occur just days before Alaskans are due to cast their votes.
