New York Times executive shot dead in California, parents‑in‑law arrested

A New York Times executive was fatally shot in California, with police saying his 77‑year‑old parents‑in‑law have been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Jonathan McKinsey, 40, the newspaper’s director of engineering for games player experience, was found with multiple gunshot wounds in a car park in Dublin – 35 miles (56 km) west of San Francisco – on Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77, are facing several charges including first‑degree murder, felony conspiracy, wilful discharge of a firearm with gross negligence and child endangerment. They were taken into custody a few minutes after the incident and are being held at the Santa Rita jail.

The victim’s body was discovered at 15:00 (23:00 GMT) on Thursday outside the Dublin Sports Grounds. Witnesses told KGO‑TV that they heard a flurry of gunshots and saw McKinsey on the ground with head and chest injuries. One witness said the couple remained at the scene before being arrested.

The police have not disclosed a motive for the killing. The accused are due to appear in court on Wednesday to formally face the charges.
