Almost 150 motorists were caught driving under the influence of drink or drugs over the first four days of the Bank Holiday road‑safety operation.
Gardaí also recorded 3,490 drivers exceeding speed limits during the weekend. Notable offences included a driver travelling at 153 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N11 at Newtownmountkennedy, Co. Wicklow, and another at 131 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the R738 at Barntown, Co. Wexford.
The operation, which began on Thursday, has so far seen more than 300 drivers detected using a mobile phone or failing to wear a seatbelt.
Two fatalities have been reported in accidents linked to the policing effort.
A Garda spokesperson urged the public to support the Road Safety Authority’s call for safer driving, reminding road users to be vigilant around pedestrians and cyclists, to wear high‑visibility clothing in low light, and to avoid distractions.
“Road safety needs to be a priority for everyone,” the spokesperson said, adding that all road users have a role in ensuring safe journeys this weekend.
