Women undergoing menopause may notice the re‑appearance of skin problems such as eczema, dryness and unwanted facial hair, explained dermatologist Professor Caitriona Ryan on The Pat Kenny Show.

Ryan clarified that acne in menopause is not directly linked to the hormonal shift, comparing it instead to acne that can develop during pregnancy. She said the drop in oestrogen can affect the skin’s lipid barrier, leading to increased dryness and eczema, especially on the lower legs and back.

To manage these changes, Ryan recommends using gentler, hydrating products, including a zinc‑containing serum in the morning and a retinoid, as basic non‑negotiable items for patients seeking cosmetic treatments.

Hair thinning also becomes more common, affecting about half of women in their 60s, driven by androgen‑related follicle miniaturisation. Ryan advises early intervention with over‑the‑counter topical minoxidil and, where needed, oral medications prescribed by a GP or dermatologist.

She stressed the psychological impact of hair loss, describing hair as “our crowning glory” and urging women to seek professional advice if they notice changes.
