Over 1,500 motorists caught speeding in Bank Holiday road policing operation
Gardaí have recorded more than 1,500 speed‑limit offences during the first two days of the October Bank Holiday…

George Gibney, the former coach of Ireland’s Olympic swimming team, is expected to receive a lengthy custodial sentence today after being convicted of 40 sexual offences.
The trial, which began last summer, saw Gibney plead guilty to five counts of indecent assault and be found guilty of a total of 40 offences by a jury. He faced 79 charges overall, relating to abuse that occurred between 1971 and 1981.
Gibney fled Ireland around 30 years ago, first to Scotland and later to the United States, where he kept a low profile. He was arrested in Florida in 2025 and subsequently extradited to Ireland, where the case was reopened following renewed public interest sparked by a 2020 BBC podcast.
Victim impact statements described Gibney as a “manipulative, brazen and cowardly predator” and highlighted the lasting damage to survivors. The Director of Public Prosecutions has described the offences as being in the “upper range of offending”.
The judge is expected to outline the offences before delivering the sentence later today.
