Ennis retains Purple Flag accreditation for its night‑time economy

Ennis has been awarded continued Purple Flag accreditation, recognising the town’s safe and vibrant evening and night‑time economy.

The overnight assessment, carried out by appointed Purple Flag assessors, included full access to three years of crime statistics and close liaison with local members of the Gardaí. The assessors gave Ennis the green light for a full renewal of its Purple Flag status.

Key strengths highlighted

The Association of Town Centre Management (ATCM) noted the town’s strong cultural offering, citing the De Valera County Library, the newly opened Súil Gallery and the concert venue glór as major successes. The town’s historic character, traditional music venues, public spaces and active streets were also praised for creating an inviting evening experience.

Councillor Tommy Guilfoyle, chair of the Ennis Purple Flag Committee and Mayor of Ennis, said two new satellite areas – Clare Youth Services on Kilrush Road and John O’Sullivan Park on Lees Road – impressed the assessors. He highlighted the valuable work of youth workers and the amenities at the park.

Margaret O’Brien, CEO of Ennis Chamber, observed that the night‑time economy has evolved, with late‑night gyms and venues such as Kaiféin coffeehouse and The Well Café extending opening hours and offering events to boost footfall.

Ennis is one of nine locations in Ireland to receive a full renewal accreditation this year, joining a network of 100 Purple Flag destinations worldwide.
