Former North Carolina governor Roy Cooper has been declared the winner of the state’s US Senate election, the Associated Press reports.

Cooper’s victory marks the first time a Democrat has been elected to the US Senate from North Carolina since 2008, and it moves the party a step closer to regaining control of the chamber they lost in the 2022 mid‑terms.

The result comes amid broader US mid‑term elections, where Democrats are hoping that public disapproval of former President Donald Trump will translate into gains across the country.

While the outcome in North Carolina is a single seat, it is seen as a significant indicator for the party’s national strategy to retake the Senate from the Republicans.
