Finn Harps FC members have given the green light to Filipino entrepreneur Freddy Gonzalez’s takeover, with 99% of votes cast in favour at a special general meeting in Ballybofey.
The meeting, held at Jackson’s Hotel, recorded 322 votes for the deal, two against and one abstention. This follows an earlier vote fifteen days ago where 396 members supported the proposal, with three opposed and one abstaining.
The second meeting was required under section 51 of the Industrial and Provident Societies Act 1893 (as amended) to confirm the special resolution; a simple majority of those voting was sufficient for approval. Club officials said the takeover is expected to be finalised by early December.
Gonzalez, a former Philippines international footballer and businessman, addressed the crowd, expressing enthusiasm for the club’s future and noting the strong supporter turnout at recent matches and meetings. Board members highlighted the historic nature of the vote for the fan‑owned club.
Club secretary Conor Edwards warned that a negative vote would have led to “week‑to‑week survival”. The final stages of the deal involve confirming creditors, securing a lease for Finn Park, and obtaining approvals from the FAI, the League of Ireland and the Finn Harps Academy CLG’s Immigrant Investor Programme funding.
Gonzalez has committed to settling the club’s outstanding debts, which the most recent accounts show as negative reserves of €725,538.
