A popular charity shop in Newtowncunningham will close after seven years of operation.
The Kindness of Strangers store, located on the village’s Main Street, opened in October 2019. Its operators said they are shutting the shop because a rent increase and difficulties recruiting staff make it unsustainable to renew the lease.
In a social‑media post, the shop’s spokesperson explained that the lease renewal comes with a higher rent and that the inability to recruit staff prompted the decision not to continue. The statement thanked the community for supporting the shop’s work raising awareness of kinship care and helping children with challenging starts in life.
The shop will be cleared out within the next day and the keys handed back to the landlord. The owners asked that no donations be left outside, as they lack the capacity to move them.
