James Comey, the former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, has been accused of two counts of unlawfully disseminating information related to national defence, marking the third set of criminal charges brought against him by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.
The allegations were revealed on Monday when sealed documents were made public, indicating that the Trump administration alleges Comey breached national security rules. The charges relate specifically to the unlawful dissemination of “information related to national defence”.
Comey, who was dismissed from his FBI role during Trump’s first term, has not been formally indicted in this case. The new charges follow two earlier attempts by the Trump administration, since the president’s return to office in January 2025, to pursue criminal proceedings against the former FBI chief.
Comey is a well‑known critic of Trump, and the repeated legal actions have drawn attention to the ongoing political tensions between the former director and the current U.S. government.
